Your Kids are Stuck in the Middle Ages: Gospel- Centered Picture Books Can Help
Share
The Middle Ages were a time fraught with challenges (not the least of which being a lack of proper toilets!).
One of the biggest religious challenges? Folks not being able to read the Bible for themselves.
Because lay people couldn't read Latin-- and because books were outrageously expensive-- they had to rely on other people to read scripture to them.
As it turns out, your young kids are in a pretty similar situation!
For the most part, our kids depend on us as their parents to provide opportunities for gospel learning, to answer questions, and to make choices about the spiritual environment of our homes (and that has a lot of upsides!).
But even very young kids are totally capable of having self-directed spiritual learning if they have the resources to do so. And that's where gospel-centered picture books come in.
Gospel-centered picture books provide ACCESS to gospel learning in a way that few other resources can:
Your child may not be able to pull out the scriptures, open up to the topical guide, and find a topic or story they want to read…
but they CAN pull a gospel-centered picture book off of the shelf and flip through its pages.
Your child might not be drawn to the large blocks of text in your quad…
but they WILL certainly be intrigued by a beautifully illustrated
Your child might not come to you and ask for some time to ponder a scripture story…
but they CAN pore over the pages of a picture book on their own-- and they'll certainly experience they blessings of pondering as they think through the story.
Your child may or may not think of doctrinal questions on their own…
but they CAN be inspired to start a conversation based on a religious picture book they've read.
Your child may not say, “Mom, I'd like to incorporate the gospel more naturally into my life"…
but they CAN choose a religious picture book as a bedtime story if it's made available to them.
So yes-- your pre- and early-reader kids may be stuck in the Medieval Age for now, but you don't just have to wait around for them to grow out of it! As you fill your home with gospel-centered picture books, you'll be able to
